Southland Farmers’ Markets

On August 6, 2001, Southland conducted a price comparison survey at six member markets and six grocery stores near the markets. Using ten common items as a representative “market basket”, Southland found in five of the six comparisons that shopping at the farmers’ market was less expensive than the nearby grocery store.

Southland recorded prices of a total of 21 items at the following farmers’ markets and grocery stores for comparisons:

• West Hollywood Farmers’ Market and Jon’s Marketplace (1.7 miles apart)
• Santa Monica Wednesdays Farmers’ Market and Wild Oats Market (.4 miles apart)
• Adams & Vermont Farmers’ Market and Ralph’s Grocery Store (.1 miles apart)
• San Dimas Farmers’ Market and Ralph’s Grocery Store (1 mile apart)
• Redondo Beach Farmers’ Market and Vons Pavilion (1.4 miles apart)
  Westwood Farmers’ Market and Bristol Farms (.6 miles apart)
